Innocents on Death Row, in Florida

The reason for our trip was a good cause:

Juan Melendez (left) was incarcerated in 1983 for a crime committed in Florida. Although he was in Pennsylvania at the time, and another man ultimately confessed to the murder, he was kept on death row for 17 years. Pure luck made a judge and a defense attorney discuss a box with a transcript of the confession in 2002.
Juan is now free and an advocate for “Voices for Justice”.

His lawyer, Marty McClain (right) is the other kind of lawyer. He spent his entire life working as a defense attorney in Florida on cases that everyone has abandoned, especially on death row. And his work contributed to revoking the use of the electric chair in the State of Florida.
As of November 3, 2009 there have been 139 exonerations in 26 different States.

“Infinito” is a documentary program for Turner Argentina, broadcasted in Latin America.

We were proud to collaborate with them for the first time. We have become excellent at packing an editing suite in the front seat, and lighting gear in the back of any car. Even if it cramped our style a bit to drive a minivan instead of a convertible…

St. Lucia here we come!

Made In Film-Land is shooting a documentary in St. Lucia for the next ten days with Taj Weekes , a St. Lucia born reggae singer, poet and humanitarian. Taj called our attention to the diabetes epidemic on the island only a few months ago, and asked us to follow him back to his homeland trying to garner national and international attention to the crises. St. Lucia has the largest number of diabetics in the world per capita, and the numbers are growing every year to catastrophic levels. In average, there are 2 amputations per day and as a result, many people are shut-ins and left alone to fend for themselves. Many of the patients are young children and entire families. Taj and Film-Land will focus on telling the personal stories of some of those children, some shut-ins, as well as the humanitarian efforts of health officials, government agencies, the local media, doctors, nurses, and the average rasta man. We are looking for answers to not only why and how the illness has spread to such levels, but also how individuals, the private sector, and the government are helping to raise awareness. While exposing personal stories, we still want to expand our focus to the larger picture of the humanitarian efforts here on the island as well as globally.

We will keep you updated for the next 10 days as we keep shooting with our small crew of Caroline, Lee, Casey and Monica. Look out for pictures, videos and regular updates of our progress.

SarahN_12, Netflix “Find Your Voice” Competition

Two-time Tribeca Winner Director Sasie Sealy is currently a finalist in the Netflix competition “Find Your Voice”, with her first feature film project: SarahN_12.
This feature film contest gathered close to 2000 feature film scripts to retain only 10 semi-finalists, and will offer $150.000 cash prize, as well as a significant post-production support.
Aside from a wonderful director, Sasie is also a friend, and we were more than happy to produce her competition trailer for “Sarah_N12″.

Shot in various locations of Williamsburg, NY, by cinematographer Brian Rigney Hubbard, you will be able to see it on June 5th on the Netflix website.
And of course you should vote for it then!

MIKL et l’Emission Sans Interdit from Paris

The young and irreverent team of L’Emission Sans Interdit (i.e. The Show Without Limits or Tabous, every night from 8 to midnight on the largest French radio: NRJ) has trusted Imploziv and their NY partner Made In Film-Land to give the show a new look.

From a new community website to the commercials to many more web videos… the new mikl.fm is quite a multimedia platform for the listeners and announcers alike.

Film-Land’s team, and our brilliant webdesigner Julia Bernadsky who surpassed herself once again on MIKL’s new website, is proud to have collaborated on this brand re-looking enterprise, under the firm and friendly production managing of Ms Alissa Ziyad from Imploziv.

And since we are all flying to France next week for the ultimate launch and celebrations: expect some updates from gay Paris.

Casting Werk

Director Christian Keresztes came to New York in search for talents for his upcoming film Werk, and called Film-Land’s resident Hungarian, Monica, for casting assistance.

With a very well written script, the duo lead of Werk will be a young American couple caught in a twisted game of manipulation between acting and real cruelty.

Werk will be shot in Budapest in september 2008, and we wish Christian the best of luck with the shoot!

Made In Film-Land continues to “throw” film bridges across the ocean.

We just completed the New York production side of the Hungarian blockbuster comedy, Valami Amerika 2 (aka. “A Kind Of America”)…

While filming on the Manhattan Bridge, in Times Square and in the Theater district on Broadway, director Gabor Herendi really captured the spirit of New York City, in just a few days.

We’ll see you at the opening screening!
